Human Rights

KOHRW since establishment is regularly reporting on human rights violations. This includes (monitoring, documentation, issuing reports and follow-up on human rights violations). This activity is not linked with a specific project but it includes: data collection, analysis, recommendations and regular visits to expected locations of human rights violations (detention centers, prisons, juvenile reformatories…etc.)

1.    OPENING THE SQUARE


2021-2023: Through Opening the Square: Protecting the Right to Peaceful Assembly in Iraq, the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) supported by DRL-DOS, (KOHRW) seek to empower local partners to actively monitor restrictions on the freedom of assembly and offer resources and technical expertise to reform restrictive laws, decisions, and policies so as to enable the full enjoyment of this right in Iraq.  Reporting on protest violations.

2. STRENGTHENING MEDIA FOR DEMOCRATIZATION IN THE KURDISTAN REGION OF IRAQ2021-2022:


Is a project implemented by KOHRW funded by UNDEF which aims to strengthen journalism and media freedom in Iraqi Kurdistan, which targets 500 journalists in four governorates (Erbil, Sulaimaniyah, Duhok, Halabja) in addition to security forces on how to deal with journalists

3. PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS TO PROMOTE PEACE AND DEMOCRACY2022:


The project was funded by the British Embassy which aims to empower the human rights defenders so that they can promote peace and democracy in Iraq and KRI. KOHRW increased the capacity of security personnel to protect human rights defenders in all 18 governorates

4. VOTER EDUCATION PROJECT EDUCATING YOUTH TO PARTICIPATE IN VOUTING PROCESS IN ERBIL, DIYALA AND BASRAH


2021: KOHRW and UNDP with support of UNAMI. The project aimed to promote knowledge and capacities of youth in the community in three governorates on rights and responsibilities of the youth in electoral system, new election law, KOHRW was successful in implementing the project and reaching even beyond the set goals, in educating and capacity building of 3130 youth through (trainings, awareness sessions and focus group discussions) and aware 60,000 youth  

5.INFORMAL RESTORATIVE JUSTICE MECHANISMS PROJECT/RESEARCH ANBAR, SALAH ALDIN, AND KIRKUK


2022: The project was funded by GIZ, the objective of the project was to conduct a qualitative study that included interviews with key actors that provided insight into the mechanisms and practices of restorative justice existing in Iraq. The study then assesses the extent to which restorative and transitional justice programming can be practiced in the project areas. KOHRW had 30 beneficiaries from the most prominent community leaders, ten of them in each of the governorate.

6.THE IMPACT OF IRAQI LAWS ON MINORITIES IN IRAQ


2023: KOHRW with CAPNI conducted a research/study on laws and regulations negatively affecting minorities in Iraq the study covered the governorates of Ninawa, Erbil, Kirkuk, and Baghdad.
